Boring Ghosts’ self-produced debut “Self-destruct In 9. 8. 3. 4. 2...” is an earnest and reflective record, stilted by confessional songwriting, tuneful melodies, and sweeping flourishes. The album carries a surreal, dream-like quality - despite its minimalist production - moving the listener in and out of moods with skillful, calculated ease. Perhaps this is the music of the sub-conscious, or of the nocturnal musings just before sleep – and in fact dreams or the altered states in between consciousness are often at the forefront of the songs’ subjects: “Hypnagogic” being the most obvious, but self-discovery by way of altered states is evidenced throughout. Although a unifying theme, this is not to say the album is without dynamics: “Tivoli” opens the record with an uplifting, sugary melody that would be equally at home on Simon & Garfunkel’s Bookends, its cascading double tracked vocals and summery acoustic accents soaring and swelling before fading abruptly, leaving the listener yearning for a refrain. “Mr. I've Got a Purpose” is perhaps the most outright rock oriented track on the album, displaying a grittier more confident side of songwriter Joey Beres - listeners may liken the marching guitar rhythm and poignant, whispered vocal to Rocky Votolato’s recent work with Chris Walla - while “Hypnagogic’s” buoyant and airy guitars recall The Sea and Cake’s delicate meanderings. Other highlights include “Equal Librium”, an elegy for a childhood gone by and a tender acceptance of adulthood uncertainty, as well as the teetering stream of consciousness stutter of “Doyouthinkysaurus”. The songwriting throughout “Self-destruct" shows a conscious level of maturity and economy – each track tightly winding the listener inward before releasing them just at the moment they are most entwined – their immediacy underscored by restraint. Likewise, the production serves only to emphasize the bones of the songs themselves, rather than to overburden them, highlighting the intimacy of subjects contemplating life, love, addiction, and ruin. “Self-destruct In 9. 8. 3. 4. 2...” is a craftsman’s record – one that is considerate of sequencing, atmosphere, lyricism, and musicality - and Boring Ghost delivers high marks in each category.

Tivoli 02:51
Tivoli I create myself Eat myself I am gone and dead Dead and gone Disappeared We’re on a rocket ship Shooting out to the stars Where we are I am 90% sure that this Is the moon It is the moon Let’s pretend we’re ants On an island in the sand Away from home The deer that lick our piss How’d they get here? Where’d they go? We’re not alone
2.
Mr. I’ve-Got-a-Purpose I’m as gloomy as grey I’m tight like a temper - a Mentally and physically exhausted You’re a nuisance to me Hanging nooses from the trees Change brings new meaning to you Mr. I’ve-got-a-purpose I’ve got to purposefully run you out of town I hope it’s somewhere where you belong Cuz I won’t love you for long Just as soon as I get home

One Light 03:34
One Light I like one light One light rather than several And I’m justifying my right My right to a child I told him this was my life And he can do what he wants with his Now I’m scared to fright That maybe I fucked with this kid’s head I can’t escape my family tree But now I know Knowing is everything I like one drink One drink after several And I’m starting to think That maybe there’s more to life Than after And that thought it begins to sink To sink deeper than anything And before I even begin to blink I’m swimming in everything I can’t escape history But now I know Knowing is everything

Hypnagogic 03:40
Hypnagogic Last night I felt you magnetize with each breath You were asleep And then amongst the greenish hue From a cell phone light We were electric I can feel your heart beating through our hands Or maybe it was mine? I can’t stop Thinking of mars or some blue planet made of ice The words that murmured in my head: Live sweetly Love freely Die happy I’d say it was music But I really don’t know why Maybe I was dreaming? But I thought I wasn’t sleeping yet?
7.
Pfft! 04:57
Pfft! Marriage is illegal Marriage is a legal contract It’s immoral It’s a moral concept Love is conscious Love is a conscious decision Going nowhere Just getting people higher I’ve been hearing all the things people are saying And I think it’s bullshit I know it is God is a paradox Stick the human in the animal Make it talk loud And call it a conversation I don’t now I don’t know where I’m going But I see me there And sometimes I see nothing I’ve been hearing all the things people are saying And I think it’s bullshit I know it is Weightlessness will carry me Carry me I hope I feel nothing It beats all of this gravity Gravity That keeps me knowing I still exist But at least I’m still conscious

Doyouthinkysaurus Electricity cumming kittens slowly needing softly feeding all the shit that keeps us living My hands find you My blood bleeds you But my heart beats through It keeps on beating How the hell am I still alive? Im not capable of separating Spitting sweaty messy (foreplay) contemplating Someones knocking in my chest Am I alive? All nerves firing back and forth frantically Some don’t come back If I reach out, hazy You won’t be there There’s the spins It’s a joke and the whole worlds laughing If I don’t come back Confused and punch drunk You’re always right You’re always right it’s you And I miss you Detoxins not a lot of funnin but it’s what you do to get it donein I’ll see you again tomorrow Or again and again on the farrow
10.
Equal Librium Playing stump All washed out Punchity punch punch Is it time to grow up? Never There’s shit on my shoes There’s dirt in my clothes I don’t know who I am anymore Is it time to get clean? It’s summer again There goes the alarm It’s a beam Uh oh, what time is it? And what’s that beeping?! Teeter Thomas Tater Thomas Too much thinky Not enough thoughts Punch… Fizz... Fade… Wake.

Ennui 03:02
Ennui I’ve chewed all my cheeks gone Eaten my fingers Rubbed all my skin raw And pulled out all my hairs But this time it’s different This time it feels like Lapping up diesel And swallowing my pride If drinking is a crime I should be on death row I’ll be biding my time With day dreams of your wet… When loneliness Is your only friend Goddamn You really get to know them And they’ll cling to you like glue Like a shadow that you can’t shake loose And I’m free from my body Fading faster and faster I want to be free from my body If drinking is a crime I should be on death row Pants around my ankles And thoughts of you with no clothes
12.
We Are Simple We are simple people in the moment In the moment our hearts take care of all our thoughts As these transient bubbles of thoughts Nervously color the roof of my mouth All these bittersweet words That stain the emptiness in my chest As these pictures of you fade All smeared on a dead man’s breast
13.
New Blood 05:24
New Blood Consequently conceptual The mind is like a light bulb Blinking, blinking, blinking Perfectly in sync for me A person’s like a constant Perfect and absolute If a picture’s worth a thousand words Than words are like gazelles Dancing all around me I eat myself In my own creation The fleshy promises I’m bound to keep Keep people meek I’ve lost my head I don’t know where it went Looking all around to where I’ve been Only took a minute All these hands perpetual Building things I can’t see Blindly watching and watching Sequentially rehearsed for me The voice is often distant Moving slowly, slowly Silence all these sirens now Cuz I can’t hear me thinking Thinking, thinking I revise myself I wish someone could tell I spend so much time in my head Looking at the ground Walking on my eyes In my eyes you see fit But looking at the ground where I lay Oh, what a waste
